THE DEVELOPMENT OF THE BALINESE RELIGION

Part 2: from the arrival of the Javanese Hindus until now

The Majapahit became kings op East Java. And in 1343 their first minister Gajah Mada conquered Bali. The priest Nirartha who lived around 1550, became great influence. He established rituals, the caste of Brahmana priests and founded important temples as Tanah Lot and Uluwatu.

From that time the Hindu priests had great influence as advisors of the Rajas, they were the judges in the courts en took the lead in the religion of the lower castes.
Exept those in some old villages who resisted these influences and preserved their old Balinese-Hinduism. The call themselves the Bali Aga, the Real Balinese.
